The purpose of this study was to define the Hospital Service Area (HSA) and Hospital Referral Region (HRR) in Korea. HSA and HRR for inpatient and outpatient were developed based on the geographical distribution of patients ``visits to hospitals. National Health Insurance Corporation (NHIC) provided the location information of hospitals and patients such as address and hospital type. Claims data from the National Health Insurance program was used to define the hospital visits in 2010. HSA and HRR were constructed based on the smallest administrative districts which is similar to Zip codes. Results showed that the boundary of HSA and HRR were not similar to the boundary of administrative districts such as city, county, and province. HSA and HRR of outpatients were similar to those of inpatients. However, some regions were different in shape and size. This finding confirmed that people visited hospitals beyond the boundary of administrative district. Administrative districts were not well matched to the service areas for hospital uses.
